New Jersey Public Library Remains Closed Because of Asbestos

A New Jersey public library has announced it will remain closed as yet more asbestos has been discovered in its structure. The situation serves as a reminder that the asbestos threat is not gone.

The public library in Morristown, New Jersey, has gone through more than a bit the last few years. The library has been in use for a long time, frequented by citizens of the town and state without a second thought. This is rather amazing since there have been two explosions that have damaged the library through the years with the most recent this past May. Are we talking terrorists here? Nope, just building issues.

The library was first opened in 1917. It has been modernized a few times, but something is apparently wrong. The building suffered an explosion in 1994 that did massive damage. Then the same thing seemed to happen this past May. The library was clear as everyone rushed out when lights started flickering and smoke was seen coming from manholes around the building. The explosion blew said manholes into the air, blasted out library windows and buckled the concrete floor on the first floor.

Investigations have yet to uncover the cause of the problem. What has been discovered is asbestos…a lot of it. One reason the investigation has come to a grinding halt is the broken up building materials released massive amounts of asbestos fiber into the air. This makes it an extremely hazardous situation for humans as said fibers being breathed in can lead to Mesothelioma cancer. Performing the investigation in HAZMAT suits is simply impossible and a professional asbestos removal operation is now under way.

So, what should we take out of this story? Are libraries inherently unsafe? Well, this one apparently is but it would be a stretch to make such claims regarding other ones. No, the big lesson here is that asbestos is still all around us and we need to recognize as much. The fact its use has been cut back in a big way does not mean it is gone. It was used in so many products and situations that it will be decades if not centuries before it is all removed.

Put another way, the asbestos-Mesothelioma scourge is far from eradicated.
