National Mesothelioma Day is on September 26, 2010. This day is being held to recognize the victims of asbestos exposure who have died from Mesothelioma. 

Asbestos was long viewed as a miracle material. If only we had known. Well, more than a few would allege that manufactures DID know that the material had a major downside – it caused a vicious form of cancer known as Mesothelioma. 

Hundreds of thousands of victims have died from exposure the last century. After years of massive legal brawls, the use of asbestos in the United States and other countries is believed by most citizens to be banned. This is unfortunate as nothing is farther from the truth. The material is still used in many applications, but is barred from more common uses that you or eye would come into contact with. Still, over 1,600 tons was produced and used in the country in 2008 alone. 

National Mesothelioma Day is designed to remember all the victims that have died. It has a secondary purpose as well. The Day is used to raise awareness of the fact the scourge is not gone. It is estimated that 10,000 a year die from Mesothelioma and more than 300,000 will die from the cancer in the next thirty years. Does that sound like a problem that is going away? Of course not. 

What can you do about this scourge? Fight the corporate powers and the politicians in their pockets. Find out how your representatives are voting on asbestos issues. If they are voting for anything less than a total ban of the material, then you should be voting them out of office.
