Newcastle Disease Virus Improves Mesothelioma Remission Rate?

A recent study is suggesting there may be some good news in the Mesothelioma fight. The Newcastle Disease Virus appears to improve the Mesothelioma remission rate in victims.

Mesothelioma is a form of cancer caused by exposure to asbestos in most cases. The cancer gets its name after the part of the body that is usually affected first – the mesothelium. This is a buffer like organ that is heavily lubricated and allows the organs in the trunk of the body to move about without causing injury. Unfortunately, the cancer is usually only discovered at the latest stage and survival rates are extremely low.

There is a form of virus called an oncolytic virus that is getting a lot of attention in the battle against cancer. This virus is unique in that it can be programmed to enter into cancer cells and essentially kill those cells. The Newcastle Disease Virus is such a disease. In recent test tube testing, the Newcastle Disease Virus was shown to successfully kill the Mesothelioma cells it was exposed to.

Given the success of the test tube testing, animal testing was undertaken. Test animals were implanted with Mesothelioma tumors and given time to recover. They were then treated with Newcastle Disease Virus. The results were fairly shocking. 65 percent of the Mesothelioma cancer cells were impacted positively by the virus within a mere 14 days. The average survival period of the animals was greater than 50 days, the outer limit of the test. Animals that did not receive any of the virus lived less than 23 days on average.

It should be noted that the above results were arrived at when one treatment was under taken. Researches noted that multiple treatments produced even better results with the cancer cells and tumors regressing significantly. This is simply great news.

The next step is to pursue human testing with the Newcastle Disease Virus. We are unaware of a clinical trials at this point, but keep an eye out for them. Perhaps this is the major breakthrough we have been waiting for when it comes to defeating the scourge of Mesothelioma.
